Georgia Tech, UNC, UGA, UT Austin, Clemson, South Carolina, Florida and Florida State close their early rounds on October 15, two weeks before everyone else. Here is the full list, the new binding Early Decision plans at both Florida publics, the separate document deadlines, and a four-week plan to make it.

The Deadline Isn’t November 1 — Eight Universities That Close on October 15

Every year, Elite Prep helps seniors through the college application process. We hope the information below is useful.

Ask almost any senior family when early applications are due and you will hear the same answer: November 1. It is the date on every checklist, every counselor handout, every kitchen calendar.

And every year, the same thing happens. Families build a careful plan around November 1, and then discover in late October that a university on their list closed its early round two weeks earlier.

For the 2026-27 cycle, eight universities close on October 15. All of them are large public universities that show up on a great many application lists. Today is September 17, which leaves exactly four weeks.

Here is everything this article covers.

1. The eight universities that close on October 15

Here is the full picture. At each of these, the application itself is due October 15.

University Plan Binding Who it applies to Application due
Georgia Tech Early Action 1 No Georgia residents October 15
UNC Chapel Hill Early Action No All applicants October 15
University of Georgia Early Action No All applicants October 15
UT Austin Early Action No All applicants October 15
Clemson Early Action No All applicants October 15
South Carolina Early Action No All applicants October 15
University of Florida Early Decision Yes All applicants October 15
Florida State Early Decision Yes Domestic applicants October 15
Florida State Early Action No Florida residents October 15

Two details that trip families up

  • Georgia Tech’s deadline depends on where you live. Georgia residents apply Early Action 1 by October 15. Everyone else applies Early Action 2 by November 2. If you are in Georgia and you have November 2 on your calendar, you have already lost your early round.
  • Florida State’s Early Action is for Florida residents only. If you live anywhere else and want to apply early to FSU, the binding Early Decision plan is your only option. Families who assume they can apply Early Action without commitment are in for a surprise.

📌 Worth remembering: nearly every other selective university closes its early round on November 1. These eight are two weeks ahead. If even one of them is on your list, your household deadline is October 15, not November 1.

2. What is new this year — binding Early Decision at both Florida publics

This one is genuinely new, and it starts with this year’s applicants for fall 2027 entry. The University of Florida and Florida State each launched a binding Early Decision plan, and both close on October 15.

University of Florida Florida State
Application due October 15 October 15
Documents due October 22 October 22
Decision released December 11 December 17
Commitment required by January 8 Deposit by January 15
Binding Yes — you must enroll Yes — you must enroll
Non-binding alternative Early Action, November 1 Early Action (Florida residents only), October 15

Binding means exactly what it says. If you are admitted, you enroll, and you withdraw your other applications.

So the decision comes down to a short list of questions.

If this is your situation What it means
This is a clear first choice and the cost works for your family Early Decision is a strong move
You need to compare financial aid packages Early Decision removes that comparison — think hard
Your student hasn’t settled on a first choice Stay with non-binding plans
The appeal is a higher admit rate That reason alone is not enough

⚠️ Important: you may apply Early Decision to one university only. You cannot apply ED to both Florida schools, and you cannot pair either one with an ED application anywhere else.

3. Your application deadline and your document deadline are different dates

This is the quiet one. Submitting the application does not finish the job. Transcripts, recommendation letters and the school report are separate documents that have to arrive afterward, and each university sets its own date for them.

University Application due Documents due
University of Florida (ED) October 15 October 22
Florida State (ED and EA) October 15 October 22
UT Austin October 15 October 22
University of Georgia October 15 October 29
Georgia Tech (EA1) October 15 October 30
Clemson October 15 November 1

Why this matters today rather than next month

Transcripts and recommendation letters are not sent by your student. They are sent by the school counselor and the teachers, and mid-October is the busiest stretch of their year. A request that gets into the queue late does not take a few days. It takes weeks.

Document Who sends it When to ask
High school transcript School counselor This week
School report and counselor letter School counselor This week
Teacher recommendations Subject teachers This week
Test scores Sent from the student’s account, or self-reported Check each university’s score deadline

4. Will the October SAT score make it in time?

A common question, and the answer is usually no.

Scores from the October 3, 2026 SAT are released on October 16 — the day after the deadline.

University October 3 SAT usable?
Georgia Tech (EA1) ✅ Yes — self-reported scores are accepted through November 16
The other October 15 universities ❌ Generally not — confirm each university’s score deadline

If your plan counted on the October test for these early rounds, now is the week to rethink it. Either you go with the score you already have, or you move these universities to Regular Decision. Deciding now is far better than discovering the gap on October 14.

5. How to combine Early Action and Early Decision

This is where families tie themselves in knots. It is simpler than it looks.

Plan Binding Can you apply elsewhere early?
Early Action (Georgia Tech, UNC, UGA, UT Austin, Clemson, South Carolina) No ✅ Yes — you may also apply Early Decision somewhere else by November 1
Early Decision (Florida, Florida State) Yes ❌ One university only

In practice, the combinations that work look like this.

Your situation October 15 November 1
A private university is the clear first choice Two to four public Early Action applications Early Decision to the first choice
Publics are the priority and cost matters Several public Early Action applications Add more non-binding Early Action
Florida is the clear first choice Early Decision to Florida No other Early Decision
Nothing is settled yet Non-binding Early Action only Build the Regular Decision list

Non-binding Early Action is the low-risk option: you get an answer early and owe nothing until spring. There is rarely a reason not to use it.

6. Scholarships and honors programs are tied to the early round

Admission is not the only thing on the line. Missing these dates can cost money.

University How the early round affects funding
Georgia Tech Meeting the Early Action deadline gives priority consideration for merit scholarships
South Carolina Early Action applicants get priority for the most competitive scholarships and programs, but the Honors College and Top Scholars require a separate application by November 15
UT Austin Honors decisions are released March 1, and honors applications are submitted with the application itself
Clemson Applicants who apply by January 1 are automatically considered for scholarships

💡 Advice: at more universities than families expect, scholarship consideration is not automatic. Rather than assuming the application covers it, open each university’s scholarship page once and read the requirements. It is thirty minutes against four years of tuition.

7. When decisions are released

Applying early means hearing early. Having one acceptance in hand in December changes the mood of the entire household while the rest of the applications get finished.

University Decision released
University of Georgia In-state mid-to-late November · out-of-state mid-December
Georgia Tech (EA1) Early December
University of Florida (ED) December 11
Clemson Mid-December
Florida State December 17
UNC Chapel Hill North Carolina residents by December 20 · all others by February 15
UT Austin January 15

8. It isn’t admit or deny — the third outcome is defer

Early rounds produce three outcomes: admit, deny, and deferral to Regular Decision.

University If deferred
University of Georgia Many applicants move to Regular Decision, with final results in mid-March
Clemson Final decision in mid-February
UT Austin Final decision on February 15

A deferral is not a rejection. It means the application moves to a round that will include first-semester senior grades — which is exactly why fall coursework still matters after the application is submitted.

One note on UT Austin: the university states plainly that applying Early Action does not give an advantage in the review. Even so, receiving an answer on January 15 rather than February 15 has real value for planning.

9. A week-by-week plan for the next four weeks

Here is the remaining time, broken into manageable pieces.

Week Dates What to finish
Week 1 September 17–23 Build one table listing every university’s application deadline, document deadline and scholarship deadline
Week 2 September 24–30 Request transcripts and the school report from the counselor; confirm teacher recommendations
Week 3 October 1–7 Finalize the main essay, finish supplemental essays, clean up the activities list
Week 4 October 8–15 Final review and submit, then check the applicant portal at each university

Submitting is not the finish line

Within a few days of submitting, each university emails instructions for an applicant portal. Log in and confirm which documents have arrived and which are still missing. If one document is outstanding when the document deadline passes, an application submitted on time still misses the early round.

10. Common mistakes and frequently asked questions

The mistakes families make most often

Mistake What happens Instead
Planning around November 1 for every university Eight early rounds disappear Check each university individually
Marking only the application deadline Documents arrive late and the application is bumped Mark both dates
Requesting recommendations in October The counseling office is overwhelmed Ask this week
Submitting Early Decision without checking the commitment No chance to compare aid offers Run the numbers first
Counting on the October SAT for these deadlines Scores arrive after the deadline Confirm score deadlines per university
Assuming scholarship review is automatic A separate deadline slips past Read each scholarship page
Never opening the applicant portal A missing document goes unnoticed Check within a week of submitting

Frequently asked questions

Question Answer
If we miss October 15, is the university off the table? No. Regular Decision is still open. You will hear later, and you may lose priority for scholarships
Can we apply Early Action to several of these? Yes. None of the six Early Action plans restricts where else you apply
Can we do Early Action here and Early Decision elsewhere on November 1? Yes. Non-binding Early Action pairs with an Early Decision application
We live outside Georgia — is Georgia Tech October 15 for us? No. Non-residents apply Early Action 2 by November 2
How do out-of-state students apply early to Florida State? Only through binding Early Decision. Early Action is limited to Florida residents
Does a deferral mean it is over? No. The application is reviewed again with first-semester senior grades

Closing — ten minutes with the calendar

The most painful early-round losses are not about qualifications. They are about dates. A family finishes the work and still misses the door by two weeks, which happens every year and can be prevented every year.

Tonight, sit down with your student, open the application list, and fill in three columns for each university: application deadline, document deadline, scholarship deadline. Ten minutes is enough, and those ten minutes will shape the next four weeks.

Elite Prep works with senior families on exactly this — sorting deadlines by university, finishing essays, and designing a sensible early-application combination. If you are not certain whether an October 15 university is sitting on your list, this is the week to find out.
