USC opened Early Decision to nearly every undergraduate program, the University of Michigan is in its second year of ED, and the University of Florida and Florida State University are offering ED for the first time with an October 15 deadline. Here are the deadlines, decision dates, exceptions, how ED differs from EA, and what families should check before signing.

New Early Decision Options This Year — USC, Michigan, UF and FSU: Should Your Student Apply ED?

Every year, Elite Prep helps seniors through the college application process. We hope the information below is useful.

As early deadlines approach, one question keeps coming up this fall:

“I heard USC added Early Decision. Should we use it?”

The biggest shift in this year’s cycle (students applying for fall 2027) is that several large universities that used to admit only through Early Action or Regular Decision now offer binding Early Decision (ED). USC opened ED to nearly every undergraduate program. The University of Michigan is running ED for a second year. And the University of Florida and Florida State University are offering ED for the first time — with an October 15 deadline.

ED is a promise to enroll if admitted. More options also mean more to check before you commit. Below are the dates and rules for each school, and what families should confirm before choosing ED.

Part What it covers
1 Early Decision vs. Early Action
2 The four schools at a glance
3 USC — nearly every program, three arts schools excluded
4 University of Michigan — year two
5 UF and FSU — October 15 is close
6 What to check before applying ED
7 What to do after an ED admit
8 Frequently asked questions

1. Early Decision vs. Early Action

The key difference is whether the plan is binding.

Early Decision (ED) Early Action (EA)
Binding Yes — enroll if admitted No — decide by spring
Other applications Withdraw all if admitted Keep them
How many Only one Several (check each school’s rules)
Comparing aid offers Effectively not possible Possible
Agreement Signed by student, parent and counselor None

⚠️ Keep in mind: ED is not just “applying early.” It is a commitment to attend if admitted, and a student cannot file ED at two schools.

2. The four schools at a glance

School ED status ED deadline ED decision EA also offered?
USC Expanded to nearly all programs this year Nov 1 Mid-December Yes (Nov 1 · mid-to-late January)
University of Michigan Introduced last year, now year two Nov 1 End of December Yes (late January)
University of Florida First year Oct 15 Dec 11 Yes (existing dates)
Florida State University First year Oct 15 Dec 17 Florida residents only

“Early” deadlines can differ by more than two weeks. The two Florida schools close on October 15, not November 1.

3. USC — nearly every program, three arts schools excluded

After a pilot in the Marshall School of Business, USC expanded ED to nearly all undergraduate programs this year.

Item Details
ED deadline November 1, 2026
ED decision Mid-December 2026
Not offered Kaufman School of Dance, Thornton School of Music, School of Dramatic Arts
Those schools Apply Regular Decision (December 1 deadline)
EA November 1 · decisions mid-to-late January (non-binding)
RD January 10, 2027 · decisions by April 1 (per USC Viterbi)
Financial aid All admitted students considered for need-based aid
Scholarships Early applicants remain eligible for merit scholarships

USC takes ED and EA on the same November 1 deadline, so the real decision this fall is “ED or EA at USC.” ED results arrive more than a month sooner, but an admit means withdrawing every other application.

4. University of Michigan — year two

Michigan introduced ED last year; this is its second cycle.

Item Details
ED deadline November 1
ED decision End of December
Financial aid Package shortly after the decision
Agreement Signed by applicant, parent or guardian, and school counselor
EA Still offered (late January decision · May 1 commitment)
RD February 1 deadline

Because Michigan sends the aid package shortly after the decision, families considering ED should estimate the cost before applying, not after.

5. UF and FSU — October 15 is close

Both Florida universities are offering ED for the first time, and the deadline is October 15.

Item University of Florida Florida State University
ED deadline October 15 October 15
Materials deadline — October 22
Decision December 11 December 17
Enrollment deposit — January 15, 2027
EA Unchanged Florida residents only
Aid and scholarships Eligible for all Need-based aid and institutional scholarships

📌 Out-of-state families: FSU’s Early Action is open only to Florida residents. For students outside Florida, the new Early Decision is the way to apply to FSU early.

UF cited feedback from high school counselors and competitiveness with peer flagship universities. FSU said students who consider it their top choice wanted a clear way to show that on the application.

6. What to check before applying ED

ED can help a student, but it is hard to undo. Before submitting, check these together as a family.

Check Why it matters
Is it truly the first choice? An admit means withdrawing everything else
Net Price Calculator You won’t be comparing offers, so estimate cost first (FSU recommends this)
Aid paperwork dates FAFSA and aid deadlines differ (FSU recommends FAFSA by Dec 1)
ED agreement Student, parent and counselor sign — parents are part of the commitment
Other schools’ rules Some EA programs restrict applying ED elsewhere
Excluded programs Like USC’s three arts schools

💡 Advice: “The admit rate looks higher” is not a reason to choose ED. ED is a strong option when the school is the first choice and the expected cost is affordable. If either is uncertain, EA is safer.

7. What to do after an ED admit

Step Details
Withdraw other applications Notify every other college
Confirm enrollment Pay the deposit by the school’s date (FSU: January 15, 2027)
Review aid Compare the package with your earlier cost estimate

8. Frequently asked questions

Q1. Can my student apply ED to USC and EA elsewhere?
USC’s rule is that students may not apply ED to another school at the same time. For EA elsewhere, check that school’s own rules. An ED admit means withdrawing other applications.

Q2. Does ED mean no scholarships?
All four schools say early applicants remain eligible for aid and scholarships. What you give up is the chance to compare offers.

Q3. We don’t live in Florida. Can we apply to FSU early?
FSU’s EA is for Florida residents only. Out-of-state students can apply early through the new ED (October 15 deadline).

Q4. ED or EA at Michigan?
Michigan offers both. If Michigan is the clear first choice and you have checked the expected cost, ED brings a decision by the end of December. If you want to compare schools, EA lets you decide by May 1.

Final thoughts

This year, USC, Michigan, UF and FSU all offer Early Decision, so families have more choices. But ED is still a promise to attend if admitted. UF and FSU close October 15; USC and Michigan close November 1. Check the dates first, then decide together whether the school is truly first and whether the cost works.
