Carnegie Mellon (CMU) Admissions, Explained: You Apply to a College, Not the University — 3 Things Parents Miss
Every year, Elite Prep helps seniors through the college application process. We hope the information below is useful.
If your student is thinking about computer science or engineering, Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) is probably on the list. Search for it and you’ll find an admit rate — but not the thing that actually decides your student’s odds.
“CMU admits about 11%. Is that the computer science rate too?”
No. At Carnegie Mellon you don’t apply to the university — you apply to one college inside it. Which college you choose changes the admit rate, the testing requirement, and whether your student can switch majors after enrolling. Apply without understanding this structure, and the same transcript can get very different results.
CMU’s Early Decision deadline is November 2, 2026. Below, using CMU’s official admissions pages and the 2025-26 Common Data Set, we lay out the numbers, the rules, what CMU weighs, the cost, and the three things families most often miss.
| Part | What it covers |
|---|---|
| 1 | The structure — you apply to a college, not the university |
| 2 | The numbers — 11.1% overall, 20.6% ED |
| 3 | Early Decision rules — ED only, November 2 |
| 4 | Testing — it depends on the college |

| 10 | Frequently asked questions |
1. The structure — you apply to a college, not the university
CMU’s admissions office states it directly:
“You apply directly to a college or school within Carnegie Mellon.”
And you may apply to only one (“You can apply to only one college within the university.”).
| College | Representative majors |
|---|---|
| Griffin School of Computer Science (SCS) | Computer science, AI, computational biology |
| College of Engineering | Electrical & computer engineering (ECE), mechanical, chemical |
| Mellon College of Science (MCS) | Math, physics, chemistry, biology |
| Dietrich College | Economics, psychology, statistics, languages |
| Tepper School of Business | Business |
| College of Fine Arts (CFA) | Architecture, art, design, drama, music |
| Information Systems | Information systems |
“Applying to CMU” really means “applying to CMU computer science” or “applying to CMU engineering.” Each college has its own applicant pool, admit rate and testing rule — so choosing the college is the strategy.
2. The numbers — 11.1% overall, 20.6% ED
From CMU’s Common Data Set 2025-26 (students entering fall 2025):
| Applicants | Admitted | Admit rate | |
|---|---|---|---|
| All first-years | 34,867 | 3,859 | about 11.1% |
| Early Decision | 2,680 | 553 | about 20.6% |
| Enrolled | — | 1,804 | — |

Two notes:
- ED applications fell sharply — from more than 4,400 the year before to 2,680, a drop of about 40% (College Transitions analysis). Part of the higher ED rate comes from that smaller pool.
- CMU does not publish admit rates by college. Admissions-analysis sites estimate the School of Computer Science at roughly 5-7%, Engineering around 17%, and Tepper around 19%. Treat those as estimates — but the structure is clear: within the same university, difficulty varies two- to threefold by college.
⚠️ Keep in mind: “CMU admits 11%” is an average. It does not describe a computer science applicant’s odds.
3. Early Decision rules — ED only, November 2
CMU offers one early plan: binding Early Decision. There is no Early Action.
| Item | Details (CMU admissions) |
|---|---|
| ED deadline | November 2 |
| ED decisions | December 15 |
| Enrollment confirmation | February 1 |
| Regular Decision deadline | January 4 (December 1 for Drama and Music) |
| RD decisions | By April 1 |
| Binding? | Yes — withdraw other applications if admitted |
| No ED for | School of Drama, BXA Design, School of Music |
ED outcomes are admit, deny, or defer to Regular Decision — and a denied ED applicant cannot reapply in Regular Decision that year. RD applicants who want to switch to ED must email admissions by November 1 and submit the ED agreement.
💡 CMU’s own framing: “If Carnegie Mellon is your first-choice university, apply with confidence.” A 20.6% ED rate is about double the overall rate, but it isn’t a free try — a denial closes CMU for the cycle.
4. Testing — it depends on the college
This is where families most often go wrong. CMU runs three different testing policies depending on the college.
| Policy | Colleges | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| SAT/ACT required | School of Computer Science | An SAT or ACT score must be submitted |
| Test-flexible | Engineering · Dietrich · Information Systems · Mellon College of Science · Tepper | Scores are required, but you choose the type: SAT, ACT, IB, AP or A-Level |
| Test-optional | College of Fine Arts | Scores optional; portfolio or audition required |
Source: CMU admissions, Standardized Testing.
Don’t read “test-flexible” as “optional.” In CMU’s words, “students are required to submit test scores in order to complete their application” — the application is incomplete without them. The flexibility is in the type of score, not whether you send one.
| Detail | Rule |
|---|---|
| SAT superscore | Accepted |
| ACT superscore | Not accepted |
| Self-reported scores | Allowed — official reports only if admitted and enrolling |
| What SCS looks for | “strength in mathematics and science” |
5. What CMU weighs — Common Data Set C7
CMU reports its own weighting of admission factors in section C7 of its Common Data Set (2025-26):
| Weight | Factors |
|---|---|
| Very Important | Rigor of secondary school record · Class rank · Academic GPA · Extracurricular activities · Character/personal qualities · Volunteer work |
| Important | Application essay · Recommendations · Talent/ability · First generation |
| Considered | Standardized test scores · Geographical residence · Work experience |
| Not Considered | Interview · Alumni relation · Level of applicant’s interest · Religious affiliation · State residency |
Three things stand out:
- Volunteer work is “Very Important” — unusual among highly selective schools.
- Interviews, legacy and demonstrated interest are not considered. Info sessions and campus visits won’t move the decision. By the standard in our earlier post on demonstrated interest, CMU is a “Not Considered” school.
- Recommendations: one counselor + one teacher, and only those two are read.
6. Enrolled-class profile
Students who enrolled in fall 2025 (Common Data Set 2025-26, C9-C11):
| Measure | Value |
|---|---|
| SAT middle 50% | 1500 – 1560 (median 1540) |
| ACT middle 50% | 34 – 36 (median 35) |
| GPA 4.0 | 43.9% |
| GPA 3.75 or higher | 85.6% |
| Top 10% of high school class | 82.5% |
These are university-wide figures; assume computer science runs higher.
7. Can you transfer into computer science later?
“Can’t we just get in through another college and switch to CS?” It’s the most common question we hear, and the riskiest plan.
The School of Computer Science publishes its internal-transfer guidelines:
| Requirement | Detail |
|---|---|
| Course grades | GPA of 3.6 or higher across 15-122, 15-150, 15-210, 15-213, 15-251 and 21-127 |
| Overall | GPA 3.0 or higher |
| Essay | 1-2 pages on interest and goals in CS |
| Involvement | SCS and other computing activities |
| Space | Only if space is available at that class level |
| Guarantee | None — students are told to keep progressing in their current major in case the transfer doesn’t happen |
Source: CMU Computer Science Department, Guidelines for Internal Transfer.
Those six courses are the core sequence CS majors take. Earning a 3.6 in them, and then needing an open seat, is not easier than getting into SCS directly.
8. Cost
For the 2026-27 academic year (Common Data Set 2025-26, G1):
| Item | Amount |
|---|---|
| Tuition | $69,702 |
| Required fees | $1,862 |
| Room and board | $19,560 |
| Total | about $91,100 |
Run CMU’s Net Price Calculator before applying ED — an ED admit can’t be compared against other schools’ aid offers.
9. Three things parents miss, and a strategy
| What families assume | The reality |
|---|---|
| ① “We’re applying to CMU” | You apply to one college. Difficulty differs two- to threefold by college |
| ② “It’s test-optional, so no scores” | Computer science requires a score. Most other colleges require one too — you only choose the type |
| ③ “Get in anywhere, then switch to CS” | Six core courses at 3.6, plus an open seat. No guarantee |
Strategy
- If computer science is the real goal: a strong SAT/ACT math score, rigorous math and science courses, and activities and essays that point the same direction — all finished before November 2.
- If CS is the dream but the record isn’t at SCS level: look seriously at adjacent colleges — Electrical & Computer Engineering, Information Systems, Mellon College of Science. The odds differ, and the coursework and careers overlap substantially.
- ED only if CMU is the genuine first choice: a denial means no Regular Decision reapplication that year. If the application isn’t ready, Regular Decision (January 4) is the safer route.
- Skip the demonstrated-interest effort: CMU doesn’t consider interviews or interest. Spend that time on course grades and volunteer work (Very Important).
10. Frequently asked questions
Q1. Can we apply to two colleges at CMU at once?
No. Per CMU admissions, you apply to one college. Choosing which one is the first strategic decision on the application.
Q2. Is Engineering test-optional?
No. Engineering is test-flexible: scores are required, but you can submit SAT, ACT, IB, AP or A-Level results.
Q3. If we’re denied in ED, can we reapply in Regular Decision?
Not in the same year. A deferral, however, is reconsidered with the RD pool.
Q4. Do info sessions or campus visits help?
They help you learn about the school, but CMU lists interviews and demonstrated interest as “Not Considered” in its Common Data Set.
Final thoughts
Carnegie Mellon isn’t a school you apply to by name — it’s a school where you pick one college and apply to it. That choice sets the admit rate, the testing rule and the options after enrollment. Before November 2, check once: which college, exactly, is your student aiming for — and is that college’s requirement already met?
