The Jack Kent Cooke Scholarship (up to $55,000 a year) is added in the Common App just like a college. Emory needs one checkbox; WashU and Vanderbilt ask for essays in a separate portal after you apply; and the Financial aid section can match your student to outside awards. Here are the scholarship deadlines that are not your application deadlines: Nov 11, Nov 15, Dec 1, Dec 16.

Scholarships You Can Apply for Through the Common App — The Process Is Simple. Missing It Is the Problem.

Every year, Elite Prep helps seniors through the college application process. We hope the information below is useful.

Right now most senior households are deep in the Common App. Essays are on their fifth draft, the activities list is being trimmed to fit, and November 1 is circled on the calendar.

Here is something many families never hear: the same Common App your student is filling out right now is also a scholarship application. A foundation award worth up to $55,000 a year runs through it, and several colleges start their full-tuition merit reviews from it.

The natural next question:

“Doesn’t applying for scholarships on top of everything else get complicated?”

Short answer: no. In most cases it adds one box, one essay, or one extra portal to an application your student is already writing. The risk is not complexity. The risk is missing it. Skip one checkbox, one essay, or one deadline, and a student can be admitted and still never be considered for the money.

This guide covers:

Part What it covers
1 Three different things “Common App scholarships” can mean
2 Path 1: a foundation scholarship submitted through the Common App — Jack Kent Cooke
3 Path 2: colleges’ own merit scholarships — every school does it differently
4 Path 3: scholarship matching in the Financial aid section
5 Scholarship deadlines are not application deadlines — one calendar
6 What to check after you hit submit
7 A checklist for parents
8 Frequently asked questions

1. Three paths, not one

“Applying for scholarships through the Common App” actually describes three separate situations. Once you separate them, it becomes clear what your family needs to track.

Path What it is Example How you apply
1. Foundation scholarship A foundation (not a college) uses the Common App as its application Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Add it to My Colleges like a school
2. College merit scholarship The college itself awards merit money Emory · WashU · Vanderbilt A checkbox, or an essay in a portal after you apply
3. Scholarship matching The Common App suggests outside awards your student may qualify for Scholarship America and NSPA partner awards Review each match and apply separately

The large dollars sit in paths 1 and 2. Path 3 is closer to “a tab worth opening now and then.” Let’s take them one at a time.

2. Path 1: Jack Kent Cooke — add it like a college

The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation (JKCF) College Scholarship is one of the largest undergraduate scholarships in the country, and the foundation uses the Common App as its official application.

How to apply — simpler than it sounds

Step What to do Note
1 Search “Jack Kent Cooke Foundation” in Common App College Search Just like finding a college
2 Add it to My Colleges It sits in the same list as the colleges
3 Review the common sections Profile, grades, activities, and honors carry over from the college application
4 Answer the foundation’s own questions Several short essays, plus family income (AGI) for the last three years
5 Request recommendations Through Recommenders and FERPA
6 Add test scores and submit SAT, ACT, AP, or IB — no minimum score

For a student already working on college applications, the genuinely new work is the foundation essays and the recommendation requests.

Three recommendations

Recommender Requirement
Teacher 1 A core academic subject teacher (English, math, science, social studies, or world language) from 11th grade
Teacher 2 A teacher or professor who has taught the student in the last four years
Counselor The school counselor (including the School Report)

💡 If your student has already asked teachers for college recommendations, it is worth asking them early whether they can send a letter to JKCF through the Common App as well.

Eligibility and timeline

Item Details
Graduation Graduating high school in spring 2027
Grades Cumulative unweighted GPA of 3.75 or higher
Income Family annual gross income up to $95,000
Testing Submit SAT, ACT, AP, or IB results (no minimum)
Citizenship Not required — but the student must live in the U.S. and attend all four years of high school in the U.S.
Award Up to $55,000 per year (tuition, living expenses, books, fees)
Type Last-dollar — it fills the gap after all institutional aid
Where Any accredited four-year college
Deadline November 11, 2026 (open since August 19)
Announcements Semifinalists January 2027 → recipients March 2027
Recipients 60 new College Scholars selected in April 2026 (varies each year)

⚠️ To be candid: the $95,000 income ceiling means many families will not qualify, and with roughly 60 new scholars a year the competition is intense. But if your student meets the criteria, this is one you should not skip. A few extra essays on an application already in progress is a shot at up to $220,000 over four years.

3. Path 2: colleges’ own merit scholarships — no two schools work alike

In dollar terms, the biggest opportunity is usually merit money from the colleges themselves — including full-tuition awards. The catch is that the application method varies from school to school. Three examples:

College Scholarship How to apply Where Deadline
Emory Emory Scholar Programs One checkbox (select “Yes”) Inside the Common App Nov 15
Vanderbilt Ingram, Cornelius Vanderbilt, and others Upload scholarship essays MyAppVU portal, after applying Dec 1
WashU Rodriguez · Ervin · Danforth 250-word short answer per program Pathway portal, after applying Priority Dec 16 · final Jan 4

Emory — one checkbox

Emory Scholar Programs have no separate application. Which is exactly why the checkbox is easy to miss.

Step What to do
1 Common App → My Colleges → Emory University → General
2 Find the question that begins “Emory University offers partial or full merit-based scholarships…”
3 Select “Yes”
4 Submit by November 15 (under ED1, ED2, or RD)

If the application is already in and “Yes” was not selected, the student can choose “Please update my application to be considered for the Scholar Programs” in Emory’s applicant portal. Decisions are released by March 1.

Vanderbilt — there is a second portal after the application

Step What to do
1 Submit the admission application through the Common App
2 Watch for an email within 2–3 business days and create a MyAppVU account
3 Open the Scholarship tab and choose the scholarship(s)
4 Upload essays as PDF or Word — by December 1
5 Confirm the green check mark and submission date

⚠️ Vanderbilt says that if you do not see a green check mark or submission date within 24 hours, the application was not submitted. Corrections are not accepted after submission. Read it once more before uploading, and check afterward.

WashU — application first, essays in the portal

Step What to do
1 Submit the Common App by December 16 for priority consideration
2 Log in to Pathway, which opens after you apply
3 Write a 250-word short answer for each program
4 Finalists hear by late February and interview virtually in early March

All three programs offer full- and partial-tuition awards. Note that the Ervin Scholars Program is open only to U.S. citizens, permanent residents, and DACA/undocumented students.

📌 See the pattern? At all three schools the scholarship deadline differs from the admission deadline, and two of them use a separate portal that only opens after the application is submitted. Hitting “submit” is not the end.

Public universities reward early applicants too

Many public universities do not ask for a separate scholarship application. Instead, they give priority merit consideration to students whose applications are complete by a priority deadline. The University of Rhode Island, for example, gives priority consideration for awards such as the Presidential Scholarship to first-year applicants who are complete by December 1. Look up the “scholarship priority deadline” for every public university on the list.

4. Path 3: scholarship matching in the Financial aid section

The Common App includes a matching feature that suggests outside scholarships your student may qualify for.

Item Details
Who First-year applicant accounts
How to turn it on Complete Profile and Education in My Common Application
Where matches appear As notifications in the Financial aid section
What you see Deadline, award amount, and eligibility for each scholarship
Partners Scholarship America · National Scholarship Providers Association (NSPA)
Scale NSPA’s database lists 20,000+ scholarships; about 1.5 million students were matched in 2024-25 (median of 14 matches each)

Two things to know

Watch out Why
It is not an application Common App answers are not passed to the scholarship. Each matched award must be applied for separately, following its own instructions.
The dollar amounts are modest Partner awards total around $5 million and are focused on first-generation and lower-income students.

So think of matching less as “where the big money is” and more as “a tab to open and scan.” Local or major-specific awards your family never knew about can turn up there.

5. Scholarship deadlines are not application deadlines — one calendar

Here are this fall’s scholarship dates in one place. The key is to mark them separately from application deadlines.

Date What Where
Nov 1 Most ED and EA application deadlines Common App
Nov 11 Jack Kent Cooke Scholarship deadline Common App (My Colleges)
Nov 15 Emory Scholar Programs (checkbox + application) Common App
Dec 1 Vanderbilt scholarship essays MyAppVU portal
Dec 1 Priority merit deadline at URI and similar public universities (example) Each college’s application
Dec 16 WashU Signature Scholar priority deadline Common App + Pathway
Jan 4 WashU final deadline Common App + Pathway

Keep this in mind — meeting the application deadline does not mean you met the scholarship deadline. Open each college’s scholarship page and confirm both the date and the method.

6. What to check after you hit submit

A surprising amount of scholarship work happens after the application goes in.

✅ Check Why
☐ Portal emails from each college Vanderbilt and WashU essays can only be submitted once the portal opens
☐ The spam folder Portal activation emails often land there
☐ Submission confirmation Vanderbilt: green check mark plus date
☐ Checkbox answers At schools like Emory, one “Yes” decides whether the student is reviewed
☐ Recommendation status JKCF is not complete until all three letters arrive

7. A checklist for parents

Scholarship essays are the student’s to write. Paperwork and calendars are where parents can help.

✅ Item Details
☐ Gather income information JKCF asks for adjusted gross income (AGI) from the last three federal tax returns
☐ Check eligibility first GPA 3.75+ and income up to $95,000? Look seriously at JKCF
☐ Build a scholarship calendar Mark application and scholarship deadlines in different colors
☐ Visit each college’s scholarship page Confirm how every school on the list reviews merit aid
☐ Organize portal logins Keep every college portal username in one place
☐ Open the Financial aid section together See whether any matched award is a real fit

8. Frequently asked questions

Question Answer
Is applying for scholarships through the Common App complicated? No. Usually it means one more checkbox or essay on an application already in progress. The risk is missing a deadline or method.
Is Jack Kent Cooke only for U.S. citizens? No. Students who live in the U.S. and attended all four years of high school here can apply without citizenship.
Does JKCF require essays? Yes, several short essays specific to the foundation.
If a scholarship shows up as a match, am I automatically applied? No. Each scholarship requires its own application.
We forgot the Emory checkbox. Now what? You can add Scholar Programs consideration in Emory’s applicant portal. Do it before November 15 to be safe.
Can we wait for admission and then apply for merit aid? At many colleges the review starts with or right after the application. Waiting for the admission decision is often too late.
Does applying Regular Decision still get merit review? It depends on the school. At Emory, full consideration requires submitting by November 15 under any plan.

Closing — one more box on an application you are already writing

Back to the opening question. Applying for scholarships through the Common App is not complicated. Jack Kent Cooke is added like a college, Emory takes one checkbox, and Vanderbilt and WashU ask for essays in a portal after the application is in.

What trips families up is that the dates differ from application deadlines, and the place to apply differs from school to school. So that no one learns after admission that the student was never in the scholarship pool, open each college’s scholarship page this week.

Elite Prep works with senior families to put application and scholarship deadlines on a single calendar and to prepare the scholarship essays themselves.
