Emory University, Explained: Emory College vs. Oxford College — What to Decide Before the November 1 ED I Deadline
Every year, Elite Prep helps seniors through the college application process. We hope the information below is useful.
Emory University is a leading private research university known for medicine, nursing and business. Open its application, though, and you’ll find a choice most schools don’t offer: Emory College, Oxford College, or both.
“Is Oxford College a branch campus? Do Oxford students still get an Emory degree?”
Short answer: Oxford College isn’t a branch campus — it’s a two-year starting campus that leads to the same Emory degree. And one application lets your student apply to both campuses. Understanding that structure, plus Emory’s two rounds of Early Decision, makes the decision before November 1 much clearer.
Emory’s Early Decision I deadline is November 1, 2026. Below, using Emory’s official admissions pages and its 2025-26 Common Data Set, we cover the two campuses, the numbers, the early rounds, testing, what Emory weighs, cost, and the three things families most often miss.
| Part | What it covers |
|---|---|
| 1 | Two campuses — Emory College and Oxford College |
| 2 | Applying to both with one application |
| 3 | The numbers — 10.3% overall, 22.2% ED |
| 4 | Early Decision — ED I and ED II |
| 5 | Testing — optional, but “Very Important” |

| 10 | Frequently asked questions |
1. Two campuses — Emory College and Oxford College
| Emory College of Arts and Sciences | Oxford College | |
|---|---|---|
| Location | Main Atlanta campus | A smaller campus outside Atlanta |
| Years | All four years in Atlanta | First two at Oxford, then junior and senior years in Atlanta |
| Feel | Large research university | Small, close to faculty, liberal arts focus |
| Degree | Emory degree | The same Emory degree |
Oxford is where Emory was founded in 1836. Students take foundational courses there for two years, then move to Atlanta as juniors to finish in Emory College, Goizueta Business School, or the Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing.
2. Applying to both with one application
Emory’s admissions office says:
“Applicants can apply Early Decision to Emory College, Oxford College, or both.”
| Option | What it means |
|---|---|
| Emory College only | Four years in Atlanta |
| Oxford only | Two years at Oxford, then two in Atlanta |
| Both | One application, considered for both campuses |
| Mixed | ED to one campus, Regular Decision to the other |
If admitted to both in ED, your student chooses the campus and pays the deposit only there.
3. The numbers — 10.3% overall, 22.2% ED
From Emory’s Common Data Set 2025-26 (students entering fall 2025, both campuses combined):
| Applicants | Admitted | Admit rate | |
|---|---|---|---|
| All first-years | 37,561 | 3,869 | about 10.3% |
| Early Decision (ED I + ED II) | 4,728 | 1,049 | about 22.2% |
| Enrolled | — | 1,443 | — |

By residency:
| Applicants | Applied | Admitted | Admit rate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Georgia residents | 4,380 | 447 | about 10.2% |
| Other U.S. states | 23,974 | 2,846 | about 11.9% |
| International | 9,207 | 576 | about 6.3% |

As a private university, Emory gives little advantage to in-state applicants — students from other states are not at a disadvantage.
💡 According to the Emory Wheel, for the Class of 2030 Emory admitted 1,041 of 3,593 ED I applicants, about 29% — 845 to Atlanta, 417 to Oxford, and 221 to both.
4. Early Decision — ED I and ED II
Emory offers binding Early Decision twice. There is no Early Action (CDS C22).
| Round | Application deadline | Financial aid documents | Decision |
|---|---|---|---|
| ED I | November 1 | December 2 | By December 15 |
| ED II | January 1 | January 6 | By February 15 |
| Regular Decision | January 1 | February 10 | By April 1 |
Source: Emory admissions, Plans and Deadlines.
- Both ED rounds are binding. An admitted student must enroll and withdraw other applications.
- ED II is a second chance for students who need more time — and it can also follow another school’s ED I result.
- Emory University Scholar Programs: to be considered, apply by November 15 — or by November 1 for ED I applicants.
5. Testing — optional, but “Very Important”
Emory remains test-optional for students applying for fall 2027. Its Common Data Set says scores are “not required for admission, but considered if submitted.” The score deadline is January 1.
| Test | 25th percentile | Median | 75th percentile |
|---|---|---|---|
| SAT composite | 1480 | 1510 | 1540 |
| ACT composite | 33 | 34 | 35 |
Source: Emory Common Data Set 2025-26, C9 · 47% of enrolled students submitted the SAT, 21% the ACT.
In the very next section, though, Emory marks test scores as “Very Important.” Optional doesn’t mean ignored — scores that are sent carry real weight. If your student’s score is in or above that range, send it.
6. What Emory weighs — Common Data Set C7
| Weight | Factors |
|---|---|
| Very Important | Course rigor · Academic GPA · Test scores · Extracurriculars · Talent/ability · Character |
| Important | Application essay · Recommendations · Volunteer work |
| Considered | Class rank · Interview · First generation · Alumni relation · Geography · State residency · Work experience |
| Not Considered | Religious affiliation · Level of applicant’s interest |
Compare that with Cornell from our previous post: Cornell rates essays and recommendations “Very Important” and GPA “Important.” Emory flips it — GPA and test scores are “Very Important,” essays and recommendations “Important.” The academic record carries more weight here. Like Cornell, Emory does not consider demonstrated interest.
7. From Oxford to Atlanta
Emory’s family guide describes the junior-year transition this way:
“Like all Emory undergraduates, Oxford students have a choice to make as they approach their junior year.”
| Where students continue | Details (official guidance) |
|---|---|
| Emory College | Declare a major and continue in Atlanta |
| Goizueta Business School | Apply separately |
| School of Nursing | Admitted automatically for junior year with a 3.0 cumulative GPA at the time of application |
| Housing | On-campus housing in Atlanta is not guaranteed |
Need-based aid received at Oxford carries over at the same percentage after the move to Atlanta, as long as students continue to demonstrate need and apply on time (Oxford College catalog).
8. Cost
For the 2026-27 academic year (Common Data Set 2025-26, G1):
| Item | Amount |
|---|---|
| Tuition | $70,300 |
| Required fees | $1,148 |
| Food and housing | $22,406 |
| Total | about $93,900 |
Run Emory’s Net Price Calculator before applying ED — an ED admit can’t be compared against other schools’ aid offers.
9. Three things parents miss, and a strategy
| What families assume | The reality |
|---|---|
| ① “Oxford is a branch or two-year college” | It’s the first two years on the path to the same Emory degree |
| ② “We have to pick one campus” | One application can cover both — including in ED |
| ③ “Test-optional means don’t send scores” | Scores are a “Very Important” factor; strong scores should be sent |
Strategy
- Start with the campus that fits. Four years at a large research university in Atlanta, or two years at a small campus close to faculty before moving to Atlanta. If both appeal, applying to both widens the options.
- If Emory is the first choice, consider ED I (November 1) — or ED II (January 1) if the application needs more time. Both are binding.
- Send scores that are in range. Emory is test-optional but weighs scores heavily.
- Skip the demonstrated-interest effort. Emory doesn’t consider it.
10. Frequently asked questions
Q1. Do Oxford students get a different diploma?
No. Two years at Oxford plus two in Atlanta lead to the same Emory degree.
Q2. Can we apply ED to Emory College and Regular Decision to Oxford?
Yes. Emory’s admissions pages say you can apply ED to one campus and Regular Decision to the other.
Q3. If denied in ED I, can we reapply in ED II?
Emory’s early decision page doesn’t address this. Check the admissions FAQ or email admission@emory.edu before applying.
Q4. Is it harder for out-of-state students?
No. In fall 2025, out-of-state applicants were admitted at about 11.9%, slightly higher than Georgia residents (about 10.2%).
Final thoughts
Emory is a school where one application can cover two campuses, and where Early Decision happens twice. Oxford isn’t a detour — it’s another starting point to the same Emory degree. Before November 1, check once: which campus fits your student, and is ED I or ED II the right round?
